Monster ArtistsYou Are Who Your Friends Are

Being a Monster Musician Means

It means you follow the path your dreams take you even when you don't know exactly where it leads. It means you do whatever it takes to get the music you hear in your mind out to the world. It means that whether you're a superstar with a tour bus the size of Connecticut or a club cowboy with a 20-year-old rusted-out minivan, you take your music as seriously as brain surgery. Maybe more.

Monster has music in its DNA. The Head Monster, Noel Lee, turned his back on a young, Chinese-American engineer's dream job – laser-fusion design engineer at California's Lawrence-Livermore Laboratory - to hit the road as a drummer with a promising rock group. When it didn't take him where he wanted to go he put his technology expertise, audio passion and obsession with excellence into the kind of technology that makes music sound the best it can be. And that was just the opening act.

Kyng

Los Angeles, CA

Kyng find grandiosity in simplicity. The Los Angeles outfit may only boast three members — Eddie Veliz [vocals/guitar], Pepe Clarke [drums], and Tony Castaneda [bass/backup vocals] — but their collective roar could easily tip the Southern California Richter Scale.

Breaking out of the City of Angels in 2011, the group's debut Trampled Sun landed shining critical acclaim for its "California Heavy" sound merging the metallic meanderings of Soundgarden and Queens of the Stone Age with the timeless scope of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. That heaviness remains encoded in the group's very moniker. "In the beginning, Kyng was just a name," the singer concludes. "Now, it's about honesty in music though. We try to be honest with ourselves so people want to listen to us for a long time to come. We want to take you back to an older era when bands didn't need all of the bells and whistles. At the same time, we're taking you down our own path to that place."

The Dollyrots

The Dollyrots

Los Angeles, CA

The Dollyrots are a punk rock band but their albums are very pop. Kelly is sugar sweet but mischievous and might sucker punch you if you're dumb enough to try her patience. She likes to do girl things like grow plants and sew up her t-shirts and crochet and make strawberry cakes.

But she also likes to play her basses til they are sprinkled with blood and drives soo fast she's not allowed behind the wheel. She loves Irish punk rock, girl groups, and anything off the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack. And she smells great. Then there is Luis... Luis is mysterious. And very smart. He is one of those guys who you meet and think maybe you'd join his cult. He likes good Brit punk, music of the early 90's because it's honest and don't forget Chuck Berry and Patsy Cline. The Dollyrots have released four full length albums and several singles and EPs through the Lookout, Blackheart, and Brando record labels. Their music has earned them song placements, commercials, and acting stints in film & TV including Disney/Pixar's Brave, Hewlett-Packard, Kohls, CSI:NY, among others. The band has logged hundreds of thousands of miles in the U.S. touring constantly since 2003, cultivating a rabidly loyal fan base while headlining and playing one-off shows in the US & UK alongside Bowling For Soup, Buzzcocks, and Joan Jett, Forever the Sickest Kids, Paramore, The Breeders, and The Go-Gos.

Battlecross

Battlecross

Los Angeles, CA

The beginning of a Battlecross assault starts with childhood friends, Tony Asta and Hiran Deraniyagala, who set forth on the path to shred and abandoned the idea of following any trends. After adding a machine-like, brutally precise drummer, a fluid yet technical bassist and a dynamic vocalist, the band was complete. A sonic metal assault that leaves audiences pumped with adrenaline, BATTLECROSS have come a long way in such a short period of time. Their first single ‘Push Pull Destroy’ has been a staple on Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal channel and with killer reviews across the internet and in print publications throughout North America and overseas, it should be no surprise that this blue collar, hard-work ethic that comes from BATTLECROSS’ five musicians translates into a potent force on record as well as on stage. Incorporating many elements of extreme thrash, death and tech metal, creating a precise blend of fist pumping brutality, intensity, and drive, BATTLECROSS satisfies both the tech-metal guru and the old-school die hard alike.

Eryn Woods

Los Angeles, CA

With her unique style and youthful voice, singer Eryn Woods is ready to dominate the world with her eclectic brand of pop punk. Her music has already been featured on Vh1 and MTV and she has worked closely with designers Betsey Johnson, JoyRich, and DimePiece among others. As the queen of the “Kupcake” brigade, a term she coined to define her “sweet, fun and diverse” fan base, Woods’ musical and fashion influence on young Kupcakes is spreading around the globe. The dance-oriented track, "Gangstas, Geeks, & Freaks", became the lead single from Wood’s self-financed debut EP Holl.E.Woods, an ode to the unapologetic underbelly of a city decorated by society’s outcasts, led by Woods herself. A play on her name, Holl.E.Woods is a brilliant and unorthodox concept album full of zealous singles. Playing numerous gigs and parties, the relatable black swan of the bubble gum world has shared the stage with the likes of Robyn, Sasha Gradiva, Adam Lambert, Natalia Kills, Hey Monday and The Ready Set. She has also performed at a variety of PRIDE Festivals across the map, making the hyper-ambitious Woods somewhat of a global ambassador for tolerance and positive change. Most recently, Eryn won the BEST ROCK FEMALE at the 2013 GA Music Awards, one of the show's highest honors.

Fake Your Own Death

Los Angeles, CA

You don’t have to die to start your life all over again, but you might have to pretend to. The members of Fake Your Own Death are constantly reinventing their sound, their vision and the Mission District art scene that they call home. Starting over again seems to be the mantra in the band’s album, “Invisible and Bulletproof,” which came out in March 2012 where it was featured on the iTunes Alternative home page for two weeks. The music sounds fresh, vital, earnest, vintage and honest. Lead singer, Terry Ashkinos (formerly of SF indie sensation Elephone), built this band around a belief that there are still questions to be explored in art and rock’n’roll. After writing a hand full of songs, Terry surrounded himself with close friends and inspired SF musicians and together they immediately started creating emotional music and performing explosive, heart felt shows. Described as literary, brutal and infectious, FYOD has been compared to bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, The Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth and Interpol by both local and national press. The band is a staple on multiple SF radio stations and have played several sold out shows as main support for Hockey, The Warlocks, You Say Party We Say Die, Admiral Radley, Bob Mould, The Velveteen, Film School, White Denim, The Trail of the Dead, White Arrows, The Frail and more.

Dirty Ghosts

Dirty Ghosts

Los Angeles, CA

Allyson Baker doesn’t scare easily. Back in the ’90s, she was sneaking into Dwarves shows and frequenting mosh pits before she was barely out of junior high. By 17, she was playing guitar for some of Toronto’s most notorious punk and hardcore bands and split in 2000 to shake up some action in San Francisco.

Allyson and Carson Binks (another Toronto expat) launched Dirty Ghosts as a stripped-down duo in 2006, writing rhythmically driven new songs built around intricate drum loops pieced together by Aesop Rock. In sharp contrast to the skull-crushing assault of her previous groups, Dirty Ghosts are more about putting the disco into discord, using everything from dubby funk to minimalist. Allyson says, “I’m thinking more about songs, and not volume and attack. That’s part of being young, but then you get older and you want to write songs that are catchy and that people will enjoy.” After 11 years in San Francisco, and five spent bringing Dirty Ghosts to life — Allyson now has everything she’s always envisioned: a shit-hot record, a fully functioning band made up of bassist Erin McDermott and drummer Ben Tuttle and appearances at SXSW, Treasure Island Festival, MusicFest NW and several tours under her belt. Keep the dial tuned and listen while they keep crushing it.

LA-based Sledge Grits Band is a pop-rock group made up of four sisters: Keiko (guitarist/songwriter) 18, Ella (bassist) 16, Mimi (lead vocals) 13, and bo-Pah (drummer) 11. Their chosen name, Sledge Grits Band, was crafted by combining their last name, Sledge, with the acronym for "Girls Raised In The Sun" to honor their Florida and California upbringing.

While much of their music is upbeat, positive and catchy, the band’s ballads and singer-songwriter compositions balance their full body of work with lyrics borne out of minds wise beyond their years. Songwriter Keiko describes hardships she and her sisters faced growing up. "When we first started playing together, we were going through a rough time as a family. Music was an outlet for us. When we were stressed or upset, we’d turn to each other and our instruments.” They've appeared on CBS, NBC and played over 300 live shows, including opening for Ludacris and performing for an audience of over 10,000 at a Girl Scout convention. Some of the biggest names in music have praised the Sledge Grits Band and their unique, mature sound. Upon hearing them play for the first time, Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams exclaimed, "Amazing! Where'd that voice and talent come from?" Jermaine Dupri called the group "just amazing," and MC Hammer predicts that the Sledge Grits Band is "our future."

This trio, made up of Ritzy Bryan (lead vocals, guitars), Rhydian Dafydd (bass, backing vocals) and Matt Thomas (drums, percussion) released their debut album ‘The Big Roar’ after signing worldwide with Canvasback Music, a division of Atlantic Records, and saw their live show expand dramatically, having made good on the promise that had seen them widely talked about as one of the bands poised to break through to bigger stages and greater acclaim.

The Joy Formidable has taken the opportunity to further widen their horizons and their sound, which is no surprise to anyone already familiar with their music and live show. As venue sizes increased, the band’s sound developed, songs were deconstructed and reconstructed with thrilling self-assurance, peaking in a month long tour with Foo Fighters and a run of high profile festival appearances. As Rhydian notes, they want to expand their sound, to always move forward, to experiment more with composition and writing, to challenge themselves to find new ways all the time. To keep the sense that everything is possible.

American Pinup

American Pinup

Los Angeles, CA

American Pinup emerged from the suburban sprawl and unsung underground music scene of Westchester County, New York and brought along an original brand of fierce, exuberant performance that is just as wild as it is charming.

The indie/punk four-piece was pegged by AMP magazine as the "voice of the new decade" and combines elements of rockabilly, surf rock, punk, pop, folk, and ska to create a fresh alternative sound. Blending the DIY ethos of the punk scene with a reverence for the melody and simplicity intrinsic to pop music, American Pinup has carved out their own niche in the world of independent music. Frontwoman Lauren West combines soulful, melodic crooning with raspy, punk rock vocals, adding dimension to their hooky compositions and high-energy live performances. In 2010, the band took to their drummer's basement recording studio where they self-produced their debut album, Strange Creatures. It quickly caught the attention of Altercation Records, who signed the band and released the record in February 2011. American Pinup has appeared at festivals such as Vans Warped Tour, The Fest, SXSW, Move Music Festival, Red Gorilla, Valley of the Vapors, Tinderbox Music Festival, Philly FM Fest, Upstart Fest, and many more since coming on to the scene. They have also been featured on compilation records such as Blood, Sweat, and Punk, Vol. 1 & 2 released by Altercation Records and the Punk for Progress compilation to raise money for V-Day.org, a global movement to end violence again women and girls, which features artists such as The Bouncing Souls. Most recently, they were featured on the international compilation Punkabilly Shakes the World, Vol. 2 released by Japanese label Rude Runner Records. In September 2013, the band released their sophomore full-length, Change Machine, which has received outstanding reviews from critics, enthusiasts, and fans on a global scale, hailing it as a more mature and polished evolution of the band's signature sound. Zakk Wylde

Los Angeles, CA

Playing guitar seriously since the age of 14, New Jersey native and now rock guitar legend, Zakk Wylde’s world changed when he learned that Ozzy Osbourne was auditioning lead guitarists and a rock photographer passed on his press kit to the godfather of metal himself.

He got the audition, but didn’t think he’d get the job. Then, the impossible happened. He got a call from Sharon Osbourne letting him know otherwise. Zakk made his debut at the age of 20 on 1988’s No Rest for the Wicked and hit the road with Ozzy in 1989. Still officially with Ozzy, in 1992 Zakk formed his first side project, Lynard Skynhead, which in 1994 was re-named Pride & Glory. They toured heavily, hooking up with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, and Whitesnake. In 1998, Zakk was hired to tour with Ozzy Osbourne again, reuniting the legendary No More Tears line-up of Zakk, Mike Inez and Randy Castillo. After an abrupt dismissal of the band after the tour, Zakk formed Black Label Society. Their first album Sonic Brew was released in 1998. Black Label Society has gone on to release a barrage of albums on a yearly basis since.

Kerry King

Kerry King

Los Angeles, CA

The first step in Kerry King’s rise to stardom happened in 1981, when he was trying out for the position as a guitarist in a band. After the session was over Jeff Hanneman approached him and the two began playing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest songs with the session drummer. King proposed, "Why don’t we start our OWN band?” The result was thrash metal legend, Slayer.

Aside from his strong, often angular rhythm guitar work, King is one of the most distinctive soloists in metal: focusing more on speed and chaos than on melody or typical metal-style technical precision. King typically makes extensive and unorthodox use of whammy bar and uses a very heavy, irregular vibrato. In addition to appearing on Slayer's albums, he has also made several guest appearances as lead guitarist. While lending production to 1986’s Reign in Blood, Rick Rubin was producing the Beastie Boys debut album Licensed to Ill. Rubin felt the track No Sleep till Brooklyn needed a guitar solo, so he offered King several hundred dollars to lay down the part. King also contributed lead guitar solos to the songs Disorder with rapper Ice-T the 1992 Judgment Night, and What We're All About from the Spider-Man movie soundtrack.

Scott Ian

Scott is the co-founder and rhythm guitar player of Anthrax. Scott, with Anthrax, helped create thrash metal in the early 80's. They have sold over ten million records worldwide, have multiple Gold and Platinum records, have been nominated for a Grammy four times, and have toured the world since 1984 on over eighty tours.

Scott had the idea to cover Public Enemy's Bring The Noise back in 1990. Chuck D and Flava Flav were featured and the two bands toured the world together kicking the asses of expectations and stereotypes. Scott takes no credit good or bad for any musical genre that came after. Scott and Anthrax have been playing shows as part of the Big 4 alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth - he had the highlight of his career in Anthrax when The Big 4 played Yankee Stadium in NYC in 2011. That day was also officially proclaimed Anthrax Day in the Bronx. Suck that everyone in high school! He’s also hosted VHI’s Rock Show, written for DC Comics and is currently promoting the band’s tenth studio album, Worship Music.
